The black buzzer is probably the most universally succesful of all the buzzer patterns. The buzzer is also the most common nymph in any water and is the pupal stage of the Chironomid or midge. If you look at any patch of water with silt at the bottom, even a puddle, midge will hatch off at some point.
The tools required for this pattern are few, A vice, bobbin holder, scissors (I use 2 pair, one for thread and the other for wire. If you only have one pair do not use the tips for wire) and a whip finish tool.
The Black Buzzer
Materials
Thread: Black 8/0 or 6/0
Rib: Silver wire
Cheeks: Orange goose biots
Varnish to finish
1. Wind the thread on at behind the eye and catch in a 2.5 inch length of silver wire.
[
2. Run the thread round the bend of the hook to the point you wish to finish your body., catching in the wire as you go. By tying the wire in at on step one it means you have an even body rather than a lump if you tied in at the tail of the fly. Run back up to the point at which you wish to strt the thorax. (If you want the body of the buzzer thicker you can run up and down the hook with the thread until desired thickness is reached.)

3. Wind the wire in even turns up the body to the thread and catch in.

4. Trim the wire and tie in two of the goose biots by the tips, one either side of the hook at the point you are to start the thorax.

5. Build up the thorax with turns of thread until you have a barrel shape as shown in the image. Pay particular attention to the proportions and aim for something similar to that shown.

6. Pull the biots to the front of the fly and tie in behind the eye.

7. Trim off the biot, build up a neat headand whip finish. The buzzer can now be coated with varnish. The number of coats will dictate the pace at which it sinks. I tend toward 2/3 coats of clear nail varnish.
If the fly is turned as the varnish dries it will greatly improve the smothness of the finish.
I use a drier designed for the purpose it is worth the investment.

Once you have mastered this pattern it opens up a whole new obsession experimenting different rib materials, body colour, cheek colour and material(Crisp packet buzzer etc.). Add breathers if you want, longer thorax, shorter body, body material (Spanflex buzzer). The list goes on.
