Practical Fly Tying

Rainbow Buzzer Step by Step

The Rainbow buzzer is a pattern introduced to me by Dave Mordue of Durham, a great pattern that reliably takes rainbow trout at many waters.

Hook: Buzzer 16-12

Thread; Black

Body: Mosaic Tinsel

Cheeks: White Varnish

Rainbow Buzzer

The original Rainbow buzzer was devised by Dave Mordue of Durham and was made from the original mosaic tinsel at that time called Rainbow Tinsel. The original tinsel was twice the width of the current version, hence I use two strands at once and Ii prefer the more broken pattern on the body rather than definite banding.

Thorax;Tying thread

Cheeks; Veniards White Varnish

1. Start the thread behing the eye of the Hook

2. Tie in two strands of Mosaic Tinsel

3. Wind the both strands of tinsel down the hook in touching turns

.4. Wind the tinsel back to thorax in open turns as if ribbing the buzzer and tie in.

5. Cut off waste tinsel and build thorax with tying thread.

6. Whip finish, cut off thread and add first cost of varnish

7. Turn fly first to one side and then the other adding the white cheeks using the tip of a dubbing needle.

8. When the cheeks have dried add two more coats of varnish
